My Kids Don't Need Milk

Never thought I'd say it! Turns out that eating lots of fish and soybean products (as we do in Japan) gives higher amounts of calcium and vitamin D than consuming dairy products. It makes me wonder why there even is a dairy group to consider. I suppose for those not living under these conditions, milk is the only substitute.

Milk was introduced in America because it was more available than fish or tofu.Dairy cows were found in almost every state and you only had to drink 2- 3 cups to get your recommended allowance for the day. Tofu should be the firm silken tofu to get 1/2 cup giving 227 mg. of calcium. I need 1200 mg a day after 50 years old.Kids in America still do not eat tofu only the strict vegetarians. The only fish that are good for calcium are the mollusks and the crustaceans . Otherwise fish are better known for their protein.Salmon and sardines you have to include the bones because they contain the calcium. Octopus and shrimp and crab are real good too. Every culture uses what is available to get their nutrition. Thanks for your blog. Love, MOM Wolter

Mark,
I also forgot to mention that dark green leafy vegetables. soybeans, bok choy, broccoli, and chinese cabbage which I know Japnese eat also has calcium. 4 ounces of firm tofu equals lcup of cow's milk.1/4 cup of almonds also has 89 mg of calcium.
Thanks for reading this too. MOM

For those of you who don't know, my mom used to teach nutrition in the public schools for many years, and still does occasionally.

I thank God for a mom like mine! She always made sure we had nutrition and taste! Thank you, Mom for your help!!
